Jewish Studies

Sixth Grade

The students continue practicing accuracy and fluency in their Hebrew reading. They begin learning inside the Chumash with Parshat Vayeitzei. Parshat
Vayeitzi talks about Jacob having a dream on a mountain. Jacob then travels to Charan and works for Laban. Jacob intends to marry Rachel but gets tricked and marries her sister Leah. Jacob continues to work for Laban and marries Rachel as well. Leah gives birth to 6 children. Rachel gives her maidservant Bilhah to Jacob to marry and Bilhah gives birth to 2 children. Leah then gives her maidservant to Jacob to marry and Zilpah gives birth to 2 children. Rachel finally then gives birth to Joseph. Finally, Jacob leaves Charan.
The skills they focus on:

Sixth Grade adds in learning “Rashi”. Rashi is a commentary on the Chumash. This helps them understand the text better and usually answers many of their own questions. Students are asked to read Rashi on their own and to try to figure out Rashi’s question and answer.

In Jewish Discovery Learning, they learn the Jewish Calendar, Hashkamat Haboker-Morning Routine and blessings (more in depth and taking notes), all the Jewish holidays, weekly Torah portions, brochot-blessings on food, nature and mitzvot, Shabbat and Havdallah, Hashem’s wonderful world, Israel- map, kotel, Knesset, kibbutz, timeline of Israel’s history, Israeli foods and cities.

Sixth Grade has Hebrew 3x a week to continue to instill a love of the language, pique their interest, and having them become more knowledgeable in Hebrew reading and understanding. Students will focus on dikduk- grammar, vocabulary lists, Hebrew stories and hands on activities in Hebrew. The class is Hebrew immersion.
