“Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas.”
– Einstein
Students internalize the learning they have experienced and engage concepts, skills and strategies for algebraic thinking. We encourage visuals, manipulatives or hands- on activities and focus on the how with reasoning at the forefront. Equations, and project-based learning excite students as they solve real world problems as they find the answer to “Why am I learning this again?”
Our approach to teaching mathematics is direct instruction with the ‘Why” in mind, and open to multiple ways to solve a problem. We work individually and in small collaborative groups -encouraging students to both challenge and support each other. As students gain efficiency -they master learning, lean on one another for support, ask relevant questions and go through all assessments asking for and offering one another feedback and teacher feedback. Projects in math are often integrated with multidisciplinary subjects such as art, engineering, civics and making the world a better place- Tikkun Olam. Grades 5-8 are the years that provide the setting gel for the strongest foundations in math as students prepare for higher level school mathematics and higher level engineering skills.
